Esta es una buena práctica para concienciar sobre el racismo en la que hemos promovido la visión del proyecto E-STAR.
Como estamos encerrados en nuestras casas debido a las restricciones por cuestiones sanitarias, hemos buscado la manera de crear espacios de encuentro, donde la empatía y el respeto sean los motores principales.
Uno de esos espacios es nuestro club de lectura. El club de lectura tiene temática feminista y leemos novelas, biografías, poemarios, novelas gráficas y ensayos escritos por mujeres, que hablan de su experiencia o reflexionan sobre el hecho de ser mujer. Al principio implementamos el club de lectura creado por la feminista Carmen G. de la Cueva, que se llama “La Tribu” y se lleva a cabo en diferentes ciudades de España, pero vimos que había muchos libros que no nos motivaba leer y también había otros que queríamos leer y no estaban en la lista, así que decidimos crear nuestro propio club en Cazalla Intercultural, y así nació “Cazalleras”.
Al final del curso, en julio, seleccionamos los libros que leeremos durante el curso siguiente y leemos un libro al mes desde septiembre hasta julio.
DE OFFLINE A ONLINE
En el club ya teníamos un grupo de whatsapp para organizarnos, aunque después los encuentros se hacían en algún local (nuestro centro juvenil, una cafetería,…). Cuando empezaron las restricciones decidimos hacer los encuentros online, aprovechando el grupo que ya habíamos creado.
Los pasos a seguir para la lectura de cada libro son:
- Publicación del próximo libro en la web de Cazalla y promoción en la newsletter.
- Promoción del libro del mes, Instagram, Facebook y el grupo de whatsapp
- División del libro por semanas. Esta división ayuda a organizar la lectura y que no se acumule todo para el final. Publicamos la división en Instagram, Facebook y Whatsapp.
- Al principio de la semana comentamos la lectura hecha hasta ese momento por medio de mensajes de texto o de voz.
- Publicamos en stories de Instagram y Facebook citas del libro y también comentarios de las lectoras con respecto al libro.
De esta manera buscamos motivar no sólo a las lectoras que forman parte del club, sino también a los seguidores de Cazalla Intercultural en sus redes sociales, para que conozcan nuevas voces y sientan curiosidad por explorar la obra de autoras mujeres.
DIVERSIDAD DE LECTURAS
En el club de lectura intentamos que los libros sean lo más diversos posible en cuanto a temática, estilo y también background de las autoras. Con esto buscamos ampliar nuestra visión del mundo y también cuestionar nuestros propios prejuicios. Los libros nos permiten escuchar con calma otras voces y así poder reflexionar y modificar nuestros puntos de vista. Además, poder escuchar o leer las reflexiones de las otras lectoras hace que la experiencia lectora sea más intensa y más rica, y así podemos fijarnos en aspectos que se nos habían pasado por alto y también compartir la pasión que nos despiertan las historias con otras mujeres que nos entienden.
UNA HISTORIA DE RACISMO
Durante el mes de marzo de 2021, el libro seleccionado fue Hija del camino, de Lucia Asué Mbomío. Este libro nos cuenta la historia de Sandra, una hija de una española y un inmigrante guineano, que busca su identidad en una vida llena de viajes, descubrimientos y momentos en los que tiene que enfrentarse al racismo, tanto visible y violento como invisible (externo e internalizado). Considerada “negra” en España y “blanca” en Guinea Ecuatorial, nos pone sobre el espejo tanto a las personas que sufren opresión como a las personas que ostentan algún tipo de privilegio. Es un libro que recomendamos leer tanto a trabajadores juveniles como a jóvenes, especialmente jóvenes racializados que pueden encontrar en Lucía a una confidente que los entiende y es capaz de expresar anécdotas muy similares a las que han vivido y así animarlos a que también cuenten su historia.
ENCUENTRO CON LA AUTORA
Antes de leer Hija del camino, contactamos con la autora para poder tener un encuentro con ella online. Accedió y pudimos charlar con ella sobre el libro, sobre lo que nos había parecido la lectura y también sobre cómo había sido su proceso de escritura. Nos habló desde el corazón sobre temas tan dolorosos como la discriminación y tan complejos como las relaciones íntimas, creando un momento mágico en el que pudimos elevar nuestra conciencia sobre este tema y comprender mejor su experiencia. Este encuentro fue muy motivador e hizo de que las participantes quisieran seguir leyendo y trabajando sobre el tema.
CÓMO REPLICAR ESTA EXPERIENCIA
Esta experiencia es fácilmente replicable por parte de tu organización. Los pasos para hacerlo son:
- Propón esta actividad a los jóvenes con los que trabajas.
- Selecciona un libro de una autora de tu país que hable sobre su experiencia sobre el racismo (invisible).
- Contacta con la autora para reservar de hora a hora y media en un encuentro online.
- Divide el libro en las semanas del mes y vete proponiendo temas y preguntas para comentarlo en el grupo.
- Prepara alguna pregunta o tema para la reunión online.
- Durante la reunión online con la autora, anima a los participantes a que comenten su lectura, sus impresiones o hagan preguntas a la autora.
- Asegúrate de dar visibilidad a todo el proceso, para difundir el trabajo de la autora y animar a tus seguidores a conocerla.
BOOK CLUB and MEETING WITH THE AUTHOR
This is a good practice we did in Spain to promote raising awareness about racism where we have promoted the vision of the project E-STAR.
As we are locked down due to health restrictions, we have been looking for ways to create meeting spaces where empathy and respect are the main drivers.
One such space is our book club. The book club has a feminist approach and we read novels, biographies, poetry books, graphic novels and essays written by women, who talk about their experience or reflect on the fact of being a woman. At the beginning we implemented the book club created by the feminist Carmen G. de la Cueva, which is called «La Tribu» and takes place in different cities in Spain, but we realized that there were many books that did not motivate us to read and there were also others that we wanted to read and were not on the list, so we decided to create our own club in Cazalla Intercultural, and so «Cazalleras» was born.
At the end of the school year, in July, we select the books we will read during the following school year and we read one book a month from September to July.
FROM OFFLINE TO ONLINE
In the club we already had a whatsapp group to organise ourselves, although afterwards the meetings were held in some place (our youth centre, a coffee shop,…). When the restrictions started, we decided to do the meetings online, taking advantage of the group we had already created.
The steps to follow for the reading of each book are:
- Publication of the next book on the Cazalla website and promotion in the newsletter.
- Book of the month promotion, Instagram, Facebook and the whatsapp group
- Division of the book by weeks. This division helps to organise the reading and not to accumulate everything for the end. We publish the division on Instagram, Facebook and Whatsapp.
- At the beginning of the week we discuss the reading done so far by text or voice message.
- We post quotes from the book on Instagram and Facebook stories as well as readers’ comments about the book.
In this way we seek to motivate not only the readers who are part of the club, but also the followers of Cazalla Intercultural in its social networks, so that they get to know new voices and feel curious to explore the work of female authors.
DIVERSITY OF READINGS
In the book club we try to choose the books as diverse as possible in terms of subject matter, style and also the background of the authors. In this way we seek to broaden our view of the world and also to question our own prejudices. The books allow us to listen calmly to other voices and thus to be able to reflect and modify our own views. In addition, being able to listen to or read the reflections of other readers makes the reading experience more intense and richer, so that we can notice aspects that we had overlooked and also share the passion that the stories arouse in us with other women who understand us.
A HISTORY OF RACISM
During the month of March 2021, the book selected was Hija del camino, by Lucia Asué Mbomío. This book tells the story of Sandra, the daughter of a Spanish woman and a Guinean immigrant, who searches for her identity in a life full of travels, discoveries and moments in which she has to face racism, both visible and violent and invisible (external and internalised). Considered «black» in Spain and «white» in Equatorial Guinea, it holds up a mirror to both people who suffer oppression and people who hold some kind of privilege. It is a book that we recommend reading to both youth workers and young people, especially racialised young people who can find in Lucía a confidant who understands them and is able to express anecdotes very similar to those they have lived through and thus, encourage them to tell their story as well.
MEETING WITH THE AUTHOR
Before reading Hija del camino, we contacted the author to have a meeting with her online. She agreed and we were able to chat with her about the book, about what we found reading it and also about her writing process. She spoke to us from the heart about issues as painful as discrimination and as complex as intimate relationships, creating a magical moment in which we were able to raise our awareness of this issue and better understand her experience. This meeting has been very motivating and made the participants want to continue reading and working on the topic.
HOW TO REPLICATE THIS EXPERIENCE
This experience is easily replicable by your organisation. You may hold a book club, but you can also just select a book and a meeting with the autor. The steps to do so are:
- Suggest this activity to the young people you work with.
- Select a book by a (female) author from your country who talks about her experience of (invisible) racism.
- Contact the author to book an hour to an hour and a half online meeting.
- Divide the book into the weeks of the month and come up with topics and questions to discuss in the group.
- Prepare a question or topic for the online meeting.
- During the online meeting with the author, encourage participants to comment on their reading, their impressions or ask questions to the author.
- Make sure to give visibility to the whole process, to spread the author’s work and encourage your followers to get to know her.
